Horizons for Homeless Children

Allen, Joan (Lukosunas)of Wareham, formerly of Cambridge passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford on August 18. Beloved mother of Charles and Kimberley Allen, Douglas and Mary (Allen) DeChristoforo. Grandmother of Victoria Allen, Mariah Vasquez, and Mariana Mayes. Sister of Dorothy Holland and her husband William, the late Mary Owirka and her surviving husband Fred, the late Robert Lukas and his surviving wife Geraldine, the late Joseph Lukosunas and his surviving wife Barbara. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, many cousins, friends and her beloved Indian Heights Beach Association. Born and raised in Cambridge, Joan lived there for most of her life until retiring to Wareham in 2006. Joan was most passionate about people - she worked on tenant right’s in Cambridge, Civil Rights, social work, and elder care. As a stay-at-home mother to her two children, her most beloved position, she brought her passion for helping others to the Cambridge Public Schools. A parishioner at Immaculate Conception Parish in Cambridge, she attended parochial school there through eighth grade and went on to graduate from Cambridge Rindge and Latin. She was the secretary for the board of directors of the Indian Heights Beach Association since retiring to Wareham, enjoyed cooking, baking, fishing and most of all the beach. Relatives & friends are invited to visit at the Donovan-Aufiero Funeral Home, 140 Otis Street, Cambridge Thursday from 3-7PM and to a Rite of Christian Burial Friday at 10:30AM in the Sacred Heart Church, 49 Sixth Street, Cambridge. Services will conclude with interment at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the Greater Boston Food Bank or Horizons for Homeless Children.
