PAPA, D. Cosmo, of Cambridge, March 5, 2022, age 96, born in Somerville, MA, to Michele Papa and Concetta (Nocca) Papa, recent immigrants from Gaeta, Italy. He graduated from Somerville Vocational High School as a machinist, with most of his final year of school spent working in a machine shop at MIT, where classified war-time military projects were being carried out. He was drafted into the US Navy during WWII and served primarily in Panama, where the Navy was charged with guarding the Canal. After his military service he returned to MIT, working first as a machinist and then as an engineer on various projects ranging from radar to radiation and radio astronomy, completing his education with engineering courses at the Lowell Institute. Upon his retirement from MIT in 1989, he was asked to assist in setting up a radio astronomy program at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, where he continued to work part-time until 2016. He enjoyed traveling, and he had a lifelong love affair with music, opera in particular.
Beloved husband for 36 years of Jane Pisciottoli Papa and the late Irene (Condon). Beloved father of Eugene Papa and father-in-law of Jennifer Yanco. Loving grandfather of Anna Yanco-Papa, her husband Kevin Braxton and their children. Caring brother of the late Gennaro James Papa and his late wife Catherine (McDonald) and the late Anna (Papa) Bidollo and her late husband Alfonso. Caring brother-in-law of Claire (Condon) Hagerty and John Pisciottoli and his wife Elaine (Daly). Fond uncle of the late Robert Bidollo and his surviving wife Susan, of Carol Bidollo, of the late Donald Papa and his surviving wife Cindy (Carnes) and their children, Kristina Reynolds and Kelly Papa; and of Donald’s son Michael Papa; and of the late James Kelly, Darlene Kelly, Stephen Kelly and his wife Nancy and their children Jeffrey, Sean and Erin and of Carol (Pisciottoli) Wallace, her husband Jason and their children. Funeral from the Donovan-Aufiero Funeral Home, 140 Otis St., Cambridge Friday at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass in the Sacred Heart Church, 49 Sixth St., Cambridge at 10. Interment St. Michael’s Cemetery, Boston. Member of Sts. Cosmas and Damian Society of Cambridge, MA. He was employed at both MIT and Harvard. Long-time volunteer for Sarah Caldwell’s Opera Company of Boston and more recently for Boston Lyric Opera.
